At any time, one might see something in the sky that they cannot explain. This is especially true at night when many various planes and other craft move through the sky. If you had all of the information necessary, you could probably identify what you saw.
Almost all of these objects are far away. But, what about an object that moves very close to you. This is what happened to a man and his daughter in Illinois in May, 2012.
